Ferrie, Emmy Jacoba (nee Sloot)

April 4, 1923- July 25, 2013

As she had wished, Emmy died at home with family and pets by her side. Born in Oolst, Emmy was the first Netherlands war bride to western Canada. Newspapers in Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria proclaimed her, “The blonde-haired, blue-eyed beauty from Tulipland.” She leaves behind: her loving husband Ron, children Heather, Ian (Jeannie), Kate Reston (Ian), and grandchildren: Kristine Dudley, Johanna and Colin Ferrie, Brodie and Peter Reston, great-grandson Jakob Silva, niece Heather Sloat, and caregiver, Nina Nillo. Emmy supported Ron in his military career, moving around Canada and to Europe, often raising three children alone for example, as Ron served as a peace-keeper in the Middle-East. Emmy will be remembered for her passion for her family, her pets, her strong sense of social justice, her generosity, her love of gardening, and her sense of humour. She had the ability to make each new home and garden, warm, welcoming- full of ‘Gezelligheid’. In lieu of flowers of flowers donate to Victoria Hospice or a charity of choice. Celebration of life at Cadboro Bay United Church, Tuesday, August 6th at 2 pm. Expressions of sympathy can sent to reston@telus.net
