Holding hands with his son and daughter, Malcolm and Toni, Douglas Crow passed peacefully on
April 22, 2026. He left this world as he lived in it: surrounded by the deep love of his family. Beside
him were his grandchildren Sophie (Harrison), Meaghan (Titoe), and Hamish (Josipa); his son-in-law
Bob; and his daughter-in-law Carolyn. Douglas now joins those who went before him, including his
parents Philip and Louie, and his siblings Sheila, Denis, and Leslie.
Douglas was perhaps most at home on the water. He introduced countless people to the joys of
sailing, with adventures stretching from the Caribbean and Mediterranean to the Gulf and San Juan
Islands. When not on deck, he found peace in gardening, hiking, and both downhill and cross-
country skiing.
He was a man of extraordinary depth, a "great explorer" of the human experience. Whether the topic
was philosophical, scientific, or practical, he came alive in conversation, possessing a rare ability to
turn his head and his hand to just about anything. He navigated life with a quiet dignity, a restless
creativity, an appreciation for the human condition, and a caring for others that inspired all who knew
him.

~~~
Douglas’s journey began in 1937 in the idyllic village of Kilmacolm, Scotland. Growing up in the
family home of Ulverscroft, he had a challenging youth that was also tapestry of outdoor adventures,
camping, and sailing with friends—passions that would define his character for nine decades.
The duty of mandatory service and a desire for adventure on the sea led him to a two-year stint in
the Royal British Navy, a period that expanded his horizons as he served in Malta, Cyprus, Egypt,
and Norway. Upon returning to civilian life, Douglas channeled his creative intellect into the study of
textile arts and technology at Strathclyde University. This paved the way for his entry into the family
business and, later, the launch of his own venture, McCaw Textiles. Ever the innovator, Douglas
eventually sold his business to become a pioneer in the then-emerging industry of double-glazing
window technology.
Central to Douglas’s life story was his thirty-five-year marriage to Dory Crow (nee Cameron) and
their children, Malcolm and Toni. Together, they built a life defined by shared adventure and a deep
commitment to family. Their journey began in Langbank, Scotland, overlooking the River Clyde and
Dumbarton Rock, before they made the bold leap across the Atlantic to Canada in the early 1970s.
They lived in a little red cabin at the Yashodhara Ashram near Nelson, BC, nestled in the Selkirk
Mountains west of the Rockies, where they studied to become yoga teachers. Eventually, they
settled in Calgary for the family to start the journey toward citizenship.
In those early Canadian years, Douglas’s resourcefulness was on full display. While at the Ashram,
he supplemented the family’s living through tree-planting ventures, where he became legendary for
his capability to build saunas at camp—bringing a touch of healing warmth to the rugged wilderness.
As the family put down roots in Calgary, Douglas had the opportunity to manage several leather
goods establishments before finding his niche in executive personnel recruitment. He spent over a
decade as a partner in his own firm, Gerald Douglas Associates, finding great fulfillment in helping
people.
In 1984, Douglas and Dory moved to Canada’s west coast to be closer to the ocean. He created
Shipshape Enterprises, and under this banner, he worked as a carpenter and renovator in nautical
and home projects. Around this time, he became more serious about his art. He was a gifted painter,
using his "explorer’s eye" to capture the world around him with the same precision and creativity he
brought to every other facet of his life.
While Douglas and Dory eventually chose separate paths, they remained close friends throughout
their lives, united by their shared history and their mutual dedication to their children and their
extended families in both Canada and the UK.
In his later years, Douglas was fortunate to enjoy a second close relationship with Gloria Giglio for
many years. More recently, they enjoyed weekly walks, talks, and being in nature that Douglas so
cherished.
Douglas was a pillar of support for many years in the community, including men’s groups, peer
counselling, workshops with first nations, work with CNIB, head injury rehabilitation and art therapy.
His tireless dedication to improving the lives of those with vision loss was recognized with a British
Columbia Community Achievement Award:
“Douglas Crow touches the lives of many on Vancouver Island with low or no vision. With his
warm, cordial approach and genuine concern for people, he is an outstanding volunteer with
the CNIB. A coordinator for the Peer Support Program, he recruits, trains and mentors new
peer counselors. As a Peer Mentor himself, he provides one on one support to people who
have recently experienced vision loss. As a community advocate and ambassador for the
CNIB, Douglas also reaches out to the greater community to encourage understanding of the
challenges faced by those with vision loss.”
He didn’t just observe the world; he worked to ensure others could navigate it with dignity.
~~~

Douglas Crow leaves behind a legacy of curiosity, kindness, and a life lived with "shipshape"
precision and heart. He will be deeply missed by his family and all those who had the privilege of
sharing a conversation, a painting, or a sunset on the water with him.
Before he passed, Malcolm read one of Dad’s poems, “Misty Morning.” We imagine him setting sail,
a captain of his next journey, one with the ocean, the sun and the wind. The poem is included below.

~~~
The family would like to thank Victoria General Hospital (VGH) staff for their outstanding
compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, we invite you to consider donating to VGH or to the charity of
your choice.
A private life celebration for Douglas will be arranged for July.
A Misty Morning
By Douglas M Crow ~ 1984
A multitude of masts mingling with the misty morn’,
silent Sentinels of stillness.
Slowly, so slowly starts this soundless day
that even the birds delay their songs;
and my intentions of another busy day of doing are wondrously shattered in the silence.
To be at peace, alone and silent.
To be released from tension, striving and hurry.
What a release that is – from doing into being.
Now the mist is thinning, and gentle air moves the many arrows of the masts to herald change.
A faint glow of promised sun struggles through the thinning vapors.
Soon sounds sift sensually through the stillness
A gull, a crow, a lapping by the bow.
How uplifting are such sounds when, one by one,
they come and beckon my awareness,
touching the inner depths of my soul
and awakening a new spirit of aliveness.
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Derek Dunwoody on March 13, 2026, at the age of 92 in Victoria, British Columbia.
Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, Derek attended school there and developed a lifelong love of sailing. As a young man he spent many hours racing boats off Howth Head in Dublin Bay, a passion that would remain with him throughout his life.
Before entering the Church of Ireland ministry, Derek worked in the insurance industry in Ireland, Scotland, and Wales while raising his young family. Feeling a call to serve in the Church of Ireland, he attended Divinity College Dublin and Trinity College. He was ordained as a deacon in 1963 and served for two years in the parish of Swanlinbar in County Cavan after which he moved to Kilkenny as the Bishop’s Vicar at St. Canice’s Cathedral. He was ordained a priest in 1965 at Kilmore Cathedral, County Cavan.
In 1967 Derek emigrated from Ireland with his young family to Montreal, Canada, where he served The Diocese of Montreal at St. Barnabas Church in Saint-Lambert, followed by two years at St. Michael and All Angels Church in Pierrefonds.
The family returned to Ireland in 1970 before Derek continued his ministry in Grimsby, England, and later in Castlederg, Northern Ireland.
Derek later moved to Canada again, serving a rural ministry based in Hodgson, Manitoba, where he provided pastoral care to four churches. He subsequently served for fifteen years at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
In 1989 he moved to Alberta to serve the Diocese of Calgary at St. Cyprian’s Church in Didsbury and at All Saints Church in Cochrane, Alberta, where he continued his ministry for ten years.
In 2002 Derek retired to Victoria, British Columbia. There he returned to his love of sailing, spending many happy years exploring the waters around Victoria and beyond with friends and later with his beloved wife Rhoda, who shared his enthusiasm for life on the water.
In retirement Derek remained deeply committed to the ministry of healing within the church and spent more than fifteen years with Rhoda shepherding a contemplative prayer group. Grounded in the Celtic spiritual tradition, Derek was a deeply spiritual man. He was progressive, searching, and unafraid to be challenged by new ideas, always open to the call of the Spirit wherever it might be found. Through his example and his own spiritual journey, he enriched and encouraged the lives of many.
Derek is survived by his wife, Rhoda — after three tries, he got it right — and by his sons Colin (Anne), Simon, and Neal (Sylvie). He is also lovingly remembered by Rhoda’s daughters Jennifer and Chloe.
His grandchildren are Stefani, Sasha, Jordan, Rebecca, Christina, Susanna, and Elena. His great-grandchildren are Leon, Owen, Edie, and Zara.
He is also survived by his brother Roger (Heather) and his sister Hilary (David).
In liew of flowers, if you wish to make a memorial donation, we suggest The Contemplative Society.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday April 25th, at 2:00 PM at St Mary The Virgin, Anglican Church, 1701 Elgin Rd. Oak Bay, BC
Shari Anne House passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026 in Victoria, BC, with family and friends by her side. Shari was born October 22, 1959 in Winnipeg. At the age of 2, the family moved to Dauphin, MB where she grew up and attended school, graduating from high school in 1977. That September and not yet 18, she enrolled in the Dental Nursing program at Wascana Institute in Regina, SK. She graduated with distinction in June, 1979.
Shari worked as a Dental Nurse in Manitoba schools until that program ended shortly after her graduation. She returned to Wascana Institute and completed the Dental Hygienist program, graduating in April of 1982. Shari worked as a dental hygienist in Calgary for many years, furthering her education and specializing as a periodontal hygienist. In 1993, she moved to Victoria, BC where she continued her career as a hygienist in periodontal offices, and where she lived until her passing.
In her earlier years, Shari enjoyed the gym and playing squash, but her real love was being outdoors in the sunshine, preferably on the beach. She could spend hours outdoors, walking, gardening or just “catching sunbeams”. Shari had an amazing green thumb, growing lush indoor and outdoor plants, and her little backyard garden in Victoria was her pride. When she wasn’t in her garden, she was at the beach or on walking adventures with her son Callum, for whom she was a fierce advocate and completely devoted.
Shari had a very big and generous heart. She had an uncanny ability to pick out “the” best gifts for family and friends, always accompanied by her humorous notes. Shari was well-known for her kindness to and compassion for those less fortunate, and befriended everyone.
Shari was predeceased by her parents, Harvey House and Irene House, brother-in-law Darcy Parrott, and her favourite uncle with whom she was very close, Albert Mayer.
She is survived by her son, Callum House, her sisters Debbie Parrott (Craig Fraser), Maureen and David Lindsay, Michelle and Peter Kokan, many nieces, nephews, and two great-nephews, all of whom she loved dearly. Also surviving are aunts, uncles, many cousins, her special friends Deb and Zena, and Lucy, her beloved Jack Russell terrier.
A service for Shari will be held at a later date in Victoria.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honour Shari’s spirit of kindness by helping someone less fortunate, or by making a donation to Threshold Housing Society.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shawn David Jeffrey on January 29, 2026, at the age of 43. He is predeceased by his mother, Elmira.
Shawn is survived by his father, David; his brother, Jason; his beloved sons, Everett and Eligh; their mother, Heather, with whom he shared many meaningful years; and an abundance of extended family members and friends whose lives he touched and who will miss him dearly.
A true Aquarius at heart, Shawn lived life with independence and spirit, leaving lasting memories with those who knew and loved him. He will be remembered as adventurous, funny, witty, and creative — a dreamer, a true go-getter who wasn't afraid to take risks. He had a sharp mind and unique perspectives that naturally intrigued those around him. He embraced life with a sense of freedom and curiosity and had a deep love for the outdoors. Whether it was riding or wheeling out in the sticks, gathering around a bonfire, boating, beaching, swimming, or camping, Shawn was happiest when he was outside enjoying nature. This was especially true when in his own backyard relaxing in the company of his two precious sons, family and friends.
Condolences may be shared with the family through Care Funeral Services. A private interment will be held on April 24 at 3:00 p.m. at Royal Oak Burial Park for close family and friends, where he will be laid to rest with his cherished mother. A celebration of life will be held at the South Island Rangers facility, located at 3498 Luxton Road, on Saturday, May 9, from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Deane Ernest David Downey - April 27, 1940 – January 24, 2026
It is with sadness and gratitude that the family of Deane Ernest David Downey announce his peaceful passing in Victoria, British Columbia on January 24, 2026, at the age of 85.
Deane is lovingly remembered by his wife, Margaret; his children, Deborah Wiebe (Mike Wiebe) and David Downey (Shelley Gaudet); and his cherished grandchildren, Matthew, Madison (Alex), Timothy (Lauren), and Lauryn Wiebe. He is also survived by his siblings Raymur Downey (Viola), Lois Westerlund, Luci Rushton, Glenni Tweedle (Dean). He was predeceased by his brothers Neil Downey (Angela) and Stanford Downey (Patricia), by his parents Edna and Murray Downey, and by his brothers-in-law Ken Westerlund and Bruce Rushton.
Born in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Deane was raised in Regina, Saskatchewan. He earned a scholarship to McGill University, later completing his M.A. in English at the University of Toronto and his Ph.D. in English at the University of Alberta, specializing in Canadian literature and national identity.
Deane devoted more than three decades to Trinity Western University, serving in numerous academic leadership roles including Acting Academic Dean, Chair of English, Dean of Humanities, and Associate Academic Vice-President. Upon his retirement in 2005, he was honoured with the designation Professor Emeritus of English and Interdisciplinary Studies. He also taught internationally and contributed to several scholarly publications.
Beyond academia, Deane served his community as a trustee on the Abbotsford School Board and participated actively in the arts, playing violin and viola with the Fraser Valley Symphony and the Trinity Western University orchestra.
Above all, Deane was a devoted and attentive husband to Margaret, loving her faithfully throughout their many years together. He was a steady and encouraging father to Deborah and David, taking deep interest in their lives, accomplishments, and journeys. As a grandfather to Matthew, Madison, Timothy, and Lauryn, he experienced much joy, treasuring time with them and following their growth with thoughtful care and delight. A faithful Christian and a true man of God, Deane lived out his deep faith with integrity, humility, and quiet strength. His steady presence, wisdom, kindness, and gentle humour will be deeply missed by his family
and all who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date in Abbotsford, British Columbia. The service will be livestreamed; further details will be shared with family and friends.
Brad was born on Aug 31,1957 in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba to Jack and June Frazer. He left us far too soon, on Jan 13, 2026 and we will miss him terribly. He told us he felt he had lived a good life with lots of travel and experiences and had very few regrets. He taught driving for several years, worked construction and finished his career at Rocky Point handling Navy munitions.
Brad was an avid skier, a talented woodworker and mason, and was never far from a book.
He leaves behind his wife Susan, daughter Marites and son Rodel. He also leaves his sisters Lee (David) and Kimberly (Kelly), many nieces and nephews and lots of wonderful in-laws and friends.
He was pre-deceased by his parents, younger brother Drew, nephew Paul and father- in-law Rudy.
A celebration of life will be held at Brad’s and Susan’s home on Sunday, January 25th from 2:00 til 4:00 pm.
With great sadness but also great respect, we say goodbye for now to Mark. Mark passed away peacefully at home from Line of Duty Firefighter cancer, surrounded by family and friends.
He is survived by his best friend of 65 years and wife of 54 years, Fern, and their three children, Rachel, Vince (Lori) and Joel (Taryn). Mark also leaves four grandchildren: Jackson, Brody, Cameryn and Declan.
Mark was born in Victoria at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. He attended Frank Hobbs, Gordon Head Jr. Secondary and graduated from Oak Bay Sr. Secondary in 1967. A talented baseball player, he was scouted by the San Francisco Giants and was sent on scholarship to Spokane Falls Community College (Spokane, WA) and later Lewis Clark State College (Lewiston, ID), where he earned a BSc. in Math and Physical Education. During that time, he also played soccer for Gonzaga University (Spokane, WA). He was named both Academic and Athletic All American, and received honourable mention as an LCSC Warrior Baseball player. In the summers Mark would play semi-professional baseball for the North Battleford Beavers. He played on the Canadian National Baseball Team and was inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame.
In 1972 he completed his post degree teaching certificate at the University of Victoria, and taught at schools throughout Greater Victoria and Sooke. After a year of teaching, Mark decided he’d “rather face a burning building than a classroom,” so in 1974 he traded lesson plans for emergencies and joined the Victoria Fire Department, where he stayed for over 33 years, retiring in 2007 as Battalion Chief.
Mark was proud of his Cree-Métis roots, and was a proud member of Métis Nation Greater Victoria and a citizen of Métis Nation British Columbia. For the last 20 years of his life, Mark gave his time and expertise as an Indigenous education resource for Victoria, Saanich and Sooke School Districts, and volunteered at the John Howard Society, assisting in restorative justice programs for Métis youth. He also led Fallen Firefighter and Métis history tours at Ross Bay Cemetery for the Old Cemeteries’ Society.
We invite all who knew Mark to attend his Celebration of Life at the Saanich Fairgrounds (1528 Stelly’s X Rd. in Saanichton) on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at 1pm.
As this is a Line of Duty service, we invite Firefighters, RCMP, and Municipal Police to wear their dress uniforms according to their protocols, if they wish. We also invite Indigenous Peoples to wear their cultural attire to honour Mark’s Cree-Métis ancestry, if they wish. Beads, moccasins, and ribbon shirts and skirts are welcome!
