Share your Memorial with Family & Friends
Alec Michael Stenger, born January 26, 1932 passed peacefully May 9, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. Alec was surrounded by the love of his family and many friends. Known for his kindness and strength he was loved and respected by many.
Born and raised in Empress Alberta, Alec’s desire to see the world took him to Victoria, BC where he joined the navy and had the opportunity to experience many countries and cultures during his service. While in the navy Alec was introduced to his wife Peggy by her brother Ronnie and 54 wonderful years ensued. Alec was an incredible husband and an amazing father to his children.
He leaves behind his loving wife and best friend of 54 years, Peggy. He will be missed by sons Steve (Jill), Stan (Patricia) daughters, Glenis (Brian), Gina (Mark) grandchildren Michael, Stacey, Jennifer, Kyle, Alyshia, Emily, Allegra and Brooklyn. Alec is survived by his brother Joe and sisters Agnes, Mary and Velma, along with many wonderful nieces, nephews and an abundance of good friends.
Grampy, Gramps Papa was playful, understanding and loving. This was obvious when he was around his grandchildren. His door was always open and he was always in attendance at important life events like graduations, birthdays or just cheering from the sidelines of their games and activities.
An avid sailor, Alec spent many days on his sailboat showing family and friends the sites around the islands and casting the occasional line into the water.
Alec left the navy after ten years to spend more time at home with his family. He started his career as a mechanic and though he worked at many places over the years, he retired from his final post with the Municipality of Saanich in 1997.
For the past several years Alec was an active member of the Victoria Fish and Game where he made many good friends. Known as “Pappy” to his friends at the range, they were an important part of his life and became an extension of his family.
Over the years, Alec has fought and won many battles against cancer but alas it wore him down and he could not beat it this time.
Our family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Michael Miles for the special care he provided over the years and in particular during this period. To the staff on the 6th Floor at VGH a heartfelt thank you for your kindness and attention to Alec and our family during these very difficult weeks.
In Lieu of flowers the family requests you donate to Tour de Rock 2014 in memory of Alec Stenger to rider: George Minshull. https://convio.cancer.ca//goto/georgeminshull
