Queen Margaret's School sends its condolences to family and friends of Barbara. Barbara was an Old Girl, Director of the OOMA and a member of the QMS Board of Governors.

I met Barbara through the Visiting Fellowship of Christ Church Cathedral. Barbara and I had many lovely conversations about her work in linguistics, particularly the Chinook language. In 1985, I signed up for Dr Harris' grammar courses. It turned out to be one of the most challenging of all the courses I took at UVic...the instructor being a formidable taskmaster and an exacting practitioner of the English language. Thanks to the extensive help Dr Harris afforded me, I barely scraped through. I think she might have been amused to find that I have spent the past 30 years editing documents from writers from Tokyo and Beijing to Moscow and London -- often graduates of the world's greatest universities. That I am considered world-class at what I do is in no small part thanks to what I learned from this outstanding educator. Rest in peace, Dr Harris. To the family, my sincere condolences...you have lost so much.
