DAVID HENRY LEIGH  (Nov 24, 1943 – Jul 17, 2021)

David passed away unexpectedly at home on July 17th.  He will be missed by his son, Michael (Kat) and 2 grandchildren in Sydney, Australia, a brother and sister in England and their families, and many friends in England, Victoria and Nanaimo.

In 1943, David’s mother was evacuated to North Wales where David was born.  After the war the family settled in Walton on Thames where David attended Kingston Grammar School.  When he finished his schooling, he trained to become a Quantity Surveyor and worked in England, Nanaimo and Victoria.

In his younger days he played field hockey and cricket, became a pilot, and sailed.  In January 1989, David suffered a massive stroke.  Although he remained partially paralyzed for the rest of his life, he never gave up.  He loved to walk and read, and took part in many activities for the disabled including horseback riding, sailing, and skiing.  He also enrolled in night school courses, paddled with a group on the Gorge, and travelled to England and Australia.  David was very social, always the life of the party, and made many friends along the way.

He was a member of St. Luke’s Anglican Church for many years and when he moved to Sooke, he joined the congregation at St. Mary of the Incarnation in Metchosin.  A Celebration of Life for David will be held at St. Mary’s,  4125 Metchosin Road on Tuesday August 24th at 2 pm.

Donations in David’s memory can be made to Victoria Hospitals Foundation.
