Deane Ernest David Downey – April 27, 1940 – January 24, 2026

It is with sadness and gratitude that the family of Deane Ernest David Downey announce his peaceful passing in Victoria, British Columbia on January 24, 2026, at the age of 85.

Deane is lovingly remembered by his wife, Margaret; his children, Deborah Wiebe (Mike Wiebe) and David Downey (Shelley Gaudet); and his cherished grandchildren, Matthew, Madison (Alex), Timothy (Lauren), and Lauryn Wiebe. He is also survived by his siblings Raymur Downey (Viola), Lois Westerlund, Luci Rushton, Glenni Tweedle (Dean). He was predeceased by his brothers Neil Downey (Angela) and Stanford Downey (Patricia), by his parents Edna and Murray Downey, and by his brothers-in-law Ken Westerlund and Bruce Rushton.

Born in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Deane was raised in Regina, Saskatchewan. He earned a scholarship to McGill University, later completing his M.A. in English at the University of Toronto and his Ph.D. in English at the University of Alberta, specializing in Canadian literature and national identity.

Deane devoted more than three decades to Trinity Western University, serving in numerous academic leadership roles including Acting Academic Dean, Chair of English, Dean of Humanities, and Associate Academic Vice-President. Upon his retirement in 2005, he was honoured with the designation Professor Emeritus of English and Interdisciplinary Studies. He also taught internationally and contributed to several scholarly publications.

Beyond academia, Deane served his community as a trustee on the Abbotsford School Board and participated actively in the arts, playing violin and viola with the Fraser Valley Symphony and the Trinity Western University orchestra.

Above all, Deane was a devoted and attentive husband to Margaret, loving her faithfully throughout their many years together. He was a steady and encouraging father to Deborah and David, taking deep interest in their lives, accomplishments, and journeys. As a grandfather to Matthew, Madison, Timothy, and Lauryn, he experienced much joy, treasuring time with them and following their growth with thoughtful care and delight. A faithful Christian and a true man of God, Deane lived out his deep faith with integrity, humility, and quiet strength. His steady presence, wisdom, kindness, and gentle humour will be deeply missed by his family
and all who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date in Abbotsford, British Columbia. The service will be livestreamed; further details will be shared with family and friends.
