Helene Marie Therese Banner was born to the de Verteuil family in Port of Spain, Trinidad, on March 26, 1930. She came to Victoria to meet her brother Jack in 1950. The first person she met was Stan Banner, her brother’s friend from the Catholic Youth Organization. They married in 1951, and lived a wonderful 73 years together.

The family moved to Port Alberni in 1960, where Helene became very active in parish life. Working with the Catholic Women’s League and the Hospital Auxiliary, she helped raise funds to support people in need. She held many prominent positions including the local CWL president and the district representative on diocesan councils. Bishop Remi de Roo presented her with an award of recognition for her contributions in 1985.

Helene was known for her handiwork with textiles, including knitting, crocheting, tatting, cross-stitching and quilting. She donated many pieces to church sales every year, and her family treasures many more pieces. They also treasure memories of her fine cooking and happy meals together. She loved hosting family and friends at the family cabin at Sproat Lake. She enjoyed returning to the tropical climate of her first home in Trinidad and to winter vacations in Mexico.

After Stan’s retirement, Helene and Stan moved to Sidney, where they enjoyed a quiet 23 further years together. After a brief illness, Helene died peacefully at Saanich Peninsula Hospital on June 9, 2023. She will be remembered by her loving husband and her five children and their families, including three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
