Obituaries

Richard passed away peacefully at Royal Jubilee Hospital Victoria after a lengthy illness. He was the much loved husband of Barbara (nee Brasnett), devoted and loving father to Tara (Mike) Hammer and loving grandfather to Lyla and Callie. He is survived by his brother Bradley (Carla).

Richard was born and grew up in Vancouver, graduating from SFU as a teacher in 1972, later completing his Masters in Education and the same year he married the love of his life Barbara. Richard worked most of his teaching career in Surrey High Schools teaching Business Education before retiring in 2005 when he and his wife Barb moved to Craig Bay in Parksville.

Richard loved and was proud of his family. He enjoyed watching Tara play sports, travelling with Barb to many exotic locations and family dinners cooking and spending time with his extended family. He was a life long animal lover having a soft spot for dogs throughout his life. Richard enjoyed volunteering throughout his life. He was active on the Surrey Parks and Recreation Board and the Fish and Game Club in Surrey and later in Parksville. Later he was on the Meadow Beach Strata Council as a member and President at Craig Bay. Richard’s favourite hobby was fishing. There was no river or lake in British Columbia Richard hadn’t fished, any chance he got he would pack up his camper and head out to find a quiet spot to fish, camp and read. Richard enjoyed cards particularly the game of bridge where he was fond of social interactions with his and Barb’s bridge friends.

We would like to thank Dr. Mitchell and all the wonderful staff on 2 South at Royal Jubilee Hospital of who provided exceptional care to Richard over his last 6 months.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Richard on April 5/2025 from 2 – 4 at the Capital City Yacht Club in North Saanich.
