Obituaries

Don died peacefully at Victoria Hospice. Mourned by his wife, Deanna Hutchings and her children, Steve and Joanna Hutchings (Brousseau), his children Jennifer, Paul, Anne (Shannon), Andrew, and Maura (Champagne), his nieces Catherine (Boss) and Lynne (Cormier), grandchildren Emma Shannon, Stephen and James Roddick, and their father Dave Roddick. Deepest thanks to Restituta Credo for her devotion and care in Don’s last half decade. Don was predeceased by his son Peter, and his brother Jack. A man of many talents, Don raised his family in Halifax, worked in four Canadian cities, circled the globe in his 50th year, and retired to Victoria where he built a life of volunteerism and advocacy for social justice and the hospice movement. Don enjoyed and actively contributed to his community and civic life. Don’s lengthy cancer experience was supported by the BC Cancer Agency and Island Health Home and Community Care, volunteers and professionals on the Inpatient Unit and the Palliative Response Team of Victoria Hospice. Special thanks to Eadris Seale, RN, Dr. Peter Battershill, and Dr. Leah Norgrove, his physician of 20 years, for ensuring the meticulous symptom management that enabled Don to live fully until his death. A memorial service is planned for Thursday, Oct 10 at 2:00 pm at First Unitarian Church of Victoria, 5575 West Saanich Road. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcomed to the Victoria Hospice Society, a local Hospice Society of your choice, or the BC Civil Liberties Association.
