I met Mrs. Chan in my last years of elementary school in the mid 70s, when Bank Street School closed and Tim and the other students from there began attending Willows. The prior school was right across the street from the Chan house. It must have been a big change for her having her kids not within hailing distance. Tim gained a number of friends who could be politely described as characters. Me among them. I remember Mrs. Chan’s real delight at some of the hijinks that took place in the kitchen and living room. But despite towering over her as our teen years progressed, she retained a very large aura that belied her size. If she didn’t like something, you heard about it. Tim and I were a part of the underground music scene. Some of the stuff we were listening to and the clothes we wore must have been especially confounding to an immigrant, but I felt warmly accepted—ALMOST always. She definitely didn’t think we were ready for some of the adventures we took, but she still let us go for overnight bike trips on our own at the end of grade 7 and a month’s long van trip at the end of grade 12. Our paths crossed less after Tim moved to Vancouver, but it was always good to chat with her when our paths crossed—and in my mind she seemed never to really age. I’m glad to have had her in my life. My condolences to Tim, Vic and the rest of the family.
