Shirley passed away peacefully in her home in Sidney, BC on December 17th, 5 weeks shy of her 97th birthday.
She was born in St. Catharines, Ontario January 24, 1927 to Roy and Ruby Peart. Shirley was the second child born to the Peart family that day with twin sister, Pat, having arrived minutes earlier.
Shirley led a long, healthy and active life filled with optimism and positivity. She was quick to laugh, kind to all and set a fabulous example. Among her many accomplishments: became a nurse, raised a set of rambunctious children and their accompanying pets, rode horses, refinished furniture, volunteered (Big Sisters, Cancer Society, Heart Foundation, St. Andrew’s Church), boated, traveled, painted, was discovered as a swim racer in her 70s and sailed solo in the Pacific in her 80s. We thought she could do anything!
Shirley was predeceased by her beloved husband of 38 years, William (Bill) Viveash (2014), but is survived by their ” blended family” – children: Bob Butt (Annie), Wendy Lynn Butt, Bill Butt (Susan) and David Viveash (Ros), Christine Flynn, Liz Hart (Randy) and grandchildren Ainsley Sanderson, Cayley Butt, Brianne Tyson, Terry Butt, Alex Butt, Chris Viveash, Alex Viveash, Michael Flynn, Emma McFarlane, Chantal Hart, Tara Kavanagh and Brandon Hart. She was also predeceased by daughter Patsy Butt-Tyson (2023), sister Jacque Pierce (2016), twin sister Pat McFarlane (2004) and first husband Bill Butt (1971).
Special thanks to the caregiving team who, along with Wendy, made it possible for Shirley to live in her own home these past few years – particularly Jean, Joy, Renee and Shirley’s most recent friend, Helen.
