Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Hoke - I will be forever grateful for his kindness and mentorship to my daughter Kate K. He was a profound influence in her life and a rare and special friend. Deepest condolences to everyone who mourns his loss.

Though I hadn't seen Hoke since the late 80's, something made me google his name this morning to see what he'd been up to. I was very much saddened to learn of his recent passing. Hoke and I worked together at the Federation of Mountain Clubs. He was just a one of a kind great guy. I think everyone who met him knew there was something very special about the man. He obviously lived a very full life. My condolences to his wife and family, and all those touched by his passing.

Dear Shannon, our deepest condolences. I will always remember Hoke as a human with close connection to the goodness of Pan, taking care of nature, of the forests an meadows. Birte remembers the very first time when she and our little sun Leonhard (six months) met him at Brentwood Bay, Hoke asked her "do you have the recessive gene for blue eyes" (Birte has dark brown eyes, where as Leonhard has blue eyes) - it is almost 30 years ago. As a student of biology Birte had to think about her family. There is one other occurrences took place, when you both visited us in Kaltenkirchen (close to Hamburg). Hoke was real fascinated from the German way of building and constructing windows. We wish you all the best and sending you all our love. Nikolai, Birte & Leonhard

Hoke was so instrumental in my learning about native plant gardening while at the Pacific Horticulture College. He was a mentor to a great many people and will be missed.
